Moles, birthmarks and port wine stain birthmarks, especially those on the face and neck, often leave patients feeling unhappy with their appearances. Moles and some birthmarks are easily removed with a minor incision. While birthmarks are simply abnormal skin colorations, port wine stains are caused by an overabundance of blood vessels under the skin. These stains generally increase in size with age. Not long ago, people with unsightly birthmarks could do little to make them less obvious. Make-up was used as camouflage, but it was not permanent and required daily re-application. Today we can employ laser surgery to treat such birthmarks, making the blemishes far less noticeable.
